GENERAL INFORMATION
Documents issued and legally valid in one country may be used in the territory of another country after being duly authenticated in accordance with the applicable procedures. Currently, there are two types of such authentication:
- Apostille issuance
- Consular legalisation
In order to simplify the procedure for legalising documents, the “Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents” was signed in The Hague in 1961. In countries that are parties to the Convention, the authentication of documents is carried out through the simplified procedure of issuing an Apostille.
A document bearing an Apostille is considered legalised and has legal effect in the territories of all States Parties to the Convention. Information on the States Parties can be found on the official website of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (www.hcch.net).
As the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as the countries to which the Embassy is accredited – the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Iceland and Ireland – are parties to the above-mentioned Convention, documents may be used in each other's territories following authentication by means of an Apostille.
